Is There Too Much Competition In Your Niche



How can you tell if a niche you might like to get into has too much competition? What is too much competition, anyway? While this article is too small a venue to entirely research the topic, it will give you a good place to start and provide you with the right questions to ask in your next phase of research.

Having found a product or a niche you think you would like to promote, and after you have done preliminary keyword research, your next step is to determine the competition levels for those keywords. Nearly every other marketer out there will tell you to go to the External Keyword Tool that Google provides for its Adwords customers (which is free, in case you did not know), and enter the keyword(s) and look for at competition levels.

You can get a more specific number of results by just entering your keyword (without quotation marks) into the search engine’s query box on the search page and see what number pops up under the keyword after the search is completed. For example, the keyword term, Blazing Saddles, says that there are “About 2,430,000 results.” Now, if you wanted to sell blazing saddles, how hard do you think it would be to compete against over 2 million pages?

But is that REALLY your competition? Most of the big guys, the Internet gurus, will tell you to avoid competition of anything over a certain number… and every one of them will quote you a different number. The idea is that your site will have to become more relevant that all the sites out there, so the fewer sites in direct competition, the better.

Well, that’s one way to look at it, certainly. But, quite frankly, I think that’s a pretty dismal way to look at it. To compete against 2 million pages sounds impossible. Heck, even competing against 50 thousand pages sounds daunting! But what if I told you that that is not your REAL competition. What if I told you that your real competition numbers far, far less than either of those numbers? What if you r real competition numbers could be counted on two hands?

Think about where it is you want your page to show up in the SERPs (search engine results pages). Do you want to be on page 5,643? Or 278? No. you want to show up on the first page of the search engine’s results page. That means you want to be in the top ten results. Your competition, then, is not the 2 million other pages that are Not on page one. Your real competition are those ten sites on page one.

Now, here’s where we get to the meat of it, unfortunately, as I mentioned in the beginning of this article, it is too small a venue to cover the issue in depth. Let me just give you a quick run down on what next you need to research. Those ten sites got to the top of the SERP because of two factors, basically: backlinks and relevancy. You understand relevancy, I’m sure and plan to make your site just as relevant if not more so. It’s the backlinks you need to study. Take the URL’s of your ten competitors to Yahoo’s Site Explorer (siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com) and look through the button labeled inlinks. How many and what kind of inlinks (these are Yahoo’s term for backlinks) is the information you need to know.
