What Is Page Rank

Do you know that Google has a system whereby it ranks the relative popularity of everyone’s websites? It’s true. The needfulness of this information has swung through the gamut of completely needful to completely useless with every change Google makes in the algorithms. As I write this, it is just after Panda, the infamous mid-summer algorithm change that Google instituted in 2011. The debate over the usefulness of page rank has once again resumed. That calls for a little discussion of page rank.

In all likelihood, you already know how a search engine works. You enter words relevant to your search into a search box and the search engine goes out and looks for the best matches for your keywords. But do you know what the parameters are that the search engine uses to decide which sites are best fitting to your search?

One way the decision is made is if the website in question uses the same key words that you used to make the search. That gives the website a plus. The next factor the search engine looks at is how relevant the site might be in terms of unique quality content. If the site has content that can found practically anywhere else on the Internet, that is a minus for the site.

So, after adding all the pluses and minuses, what if there are far too many websites with the same general value? What is the deciding factor for the search engine’s to use to serve you the best results. This is where page rank comes into play.

Okay, then…what is page rank? It is that system used by Google to determine just how popular your website is. Why? All other factors that we mentioned in the last two paragraphs being equal, Google thinks that other people giving you links on their sites must be like “voting” for your site. Google sees the “vote” as social proof of your site’s relevancy to the given keywords associated with your site.

Is it possible to influence page rank? Yes. One way is to go out and find websites that are relevant to your niche and find some way to pant a link on that site that points beck to yours. You can always email the owner and ask for a link, but apart from buying ad space, this is likely to happen unless you offer him something in return. Oftentimes, and especially in the early years of search engine algorithms, a link exchange between the two websites was a useful way to get links. These days, link exchanges are only good for relationship building and networking and not as good for counting towards page rank, as Google has decided that link exchanges are too easily exploited for said page rank.

The best way to get a one-way link back from a website is to comment on any of the site’s blog posts. Many blogs allow commenting, so find one in your niche and post something pertinent to the post’s topic. If you leave one-liners, like saying, “thanks for this share.” And nothing pertinent to the post, your comment will likely get erased. Webmaster are no longer accepting these kinds of links because the spammers have ruined it for all of us.

Another great place to leave links that point back to your site is in the forums. Find forums that are related to your niche, sign up and start conversing with others. Not only will you have links in your signature that will get spidered by the search engines, but so will your forum profile page, which can be filled with links as well.
