What You Need To Think About When Building A New Website

When you decide you want to build a website, you have so many options open to you that it can be quite overwhelming and confusing. So, as a start, let’s begin at the beginning and talk about where to start.

The first question to ask yourself is what do you want your website to do. Is it a personal “journal” type site or are you looking to create a little side “egg” money? Or both, perhaps? Or maybe you want this to become a serious income maker. Whatever your needs and desires for your website, you should make that decision first and then start looking into what type of website will suit your needs.

You can use software programs like Dreamweaver that will help you build a static HTML-based website. In these packages, you can build individual pages with a visual editor by dragging and dropping elements where you want them, or you can build the pages with the use of a WYSIWYG, which stands for “What You See Is What You Get.” You type in the coding, and when it renders, you have a hand-built page. To build a page like this, you will need to learn the coding language of the Internet, called HTML, which stand for Hyper Text Markup Language.

Hmmm, that is still all fairly overwhelming for folks who are new to this stuff (we veterans call them newbies, for that reason). There is one very easy alternative to site building (relative to the previously mentioned options) that is very popular. Many, many people are using content management systems (CMS) to build their sites. A CMS site is a blog. Not only are blog sites easier to build, once learned, the CMS aren’t that difficult to learn to use, either.

The two most popular CMS programs are WordPress and Joomla, in that order. WordPress comes with famous 5-minute install instructions, but most website hosting account cPanels have a program in them called Fantastico that makes installation of the WordPress blog system even easier than that.

The website is only one decision in the process of website building. You will need to find a place to host your website, and decide on the layout of your site. You will need quality content to fill your site, and, if you are wanting to monetize your site, you will need to define your monetization methods. All these things, and much more, are more than the scope this one article can cover, but come on back and we will endeavor to cover all these topics and more.
